Thirteen

BRONAN

“She’s smirking,” River whispers across the table. “Pass me the bread.”

“He’s smirking,” Maman responds, handing her a basket of zeppa, not at all caring that we can hear them.

“I think they did it,” Villi calls out from under the table. Morky giggles and agrees with him and their voices babble with other Tiiblets.

Beautiful Isabelae blushes. It took us two days to leave the apartment, and this is our first meal with the family.

A crash sounds from the doorway, where Wrombley is carrying a plate. Skiden gets up to help him clean the mess, but my Tiiblet comes over to Isabelae and throws himself into her arms.

I’m shocked—Wrombley isn’t normally so emotional. In fact, he’s standoffish with Isabelae. He wants her to be my mate, not my breeder, and nothing will convince him otherwise.

“Thank you,” he whispers. “Thank you for giving us kishren.”

“Oh,” she says, and then smothers his ugly face with kisses. “I knew you loved me!”

I feel somewhat jealous. I wish she would do that to me.

“Yes, we did do it,” I announce to everyone at the dinner table. “Our first mating and it was magnificent. Perhaps Isabelae is gestating even now.”

She looks up and gives me a smile.

“Maybe we need to try every night, every hour until we know for sure,” I say, my gaze tying with hers.

“Yes.” She smiles shyly. “When do those trials begin?”

I start. The javel’inkt trials? Why does she wish to know?

Tiran drops his fork, and it clatters across the table.

Everyone goes silent.

Isabelae frowns. “Is something wrong?”

“No, ki aniasa.” I smile lightly, trying to ease her worry. “Not at all. It is just that…the javelink’t trials are complicated. There is much more at stake than just entering. A male has to want to upgrade his position to another level and then he must prove his worth by taking on an opponent.”

“Oh,” she says. “Has anyone so far, actually…like applied?”

I smile gently, wanting to encourage her to ask questions that I will thwart. “No, sweet. Not as of yet.”

Tiran snorts and my mate’s eyes cut to him.

“I am sure you don’t want to enter, brother,” I warn, playing like I am teasing him, but really warning him to keep quiet.

“Bronan,” Isabelae gasps. “Are you discouraging him?”

I—and everyone else—know what she’s thinking. She wonders if I discourage others because she knows Tiran isn’t interested. Tiran smirks. My smile shows teeth this time…teeth that Tiran can see.

“No, ki Isabelae. I do not. I am merely trying to keep him safe”—I decide to pull my sister-in-mate into this— “for River’s sake.”

“Oh, hey, yeah. I do want my guy safe,” River says.

“Safe? Is this a punishment to enter these trials?” Isabelae asks.

Skiden laughs. “It is for Tiran. If he wins, he gets to lead the clan.”

River gasps. “No way. Tiran loves his brother.” She wraps her arms around his thick neck as she speaks.

“I do,” Tiran says nuzzling her neck as she cuddles him. He glares at me, and it does not look like love.

But I settle back, satisfied with his refusal.
